See color with your rods
Print this AIC file
dark adapt
light a candle outside on a moonless night
Perform experiment
Cone colors - higher radiances
After dark adaptation, strike a match and light the candle, or ignite the cigarette lighter.
Hold the AIC PRINT close to the light source.
Observer the colors. Note the difference in color between the letters A, C and the letter I.
When the firelight is near the print, it is seen by L-, M-, S-cones.
Rod/L-cone colors - lower radiances
Move the AIC print 4 to 6 feet away from the light source. Observer the colors.
Note the similarity in color of letters A, I, C and the letter
When the firelight is far from the print, it is seen by rod/L-cones.
Appearance from rod/L-cone interactions. Print has the same scotopic luminance, so letters AIC have the same lightness on the rods.
Repeat
Move the AIC PRINT back near the candle, and observe the color of the letters, above M-, and /S-cone threshold.
DEMO
How to see color with rods

Copy this AIC image and make a paper print using a digital printer.
Light-free dark room
Find a completely dark room that is free of papers and other combustible materials. or go outside on a moonless night.
Doing this experiment at nighttime will help a lot.
Dark adapt
Sit in the dark for at least 10 minutes. To be fully dark-adapted, you need to sit in the dark for 30 minutes.
